Rough closure

AE ideas, explained

In everyday terms: something can be settled while important questions remain open. Rough closure asks which unfinished conditions matter for what happens next.

Think of a returned library book

You return a book, but your account still shows it as overdue. The return is complete; the record that controls a fine is unchanged. A simple error may explain the case. The useful question is what still needs to happen for the correction to take effect.

Questions to try

  • What has actually been settled?
  • What remains unresolved, and who does it affect?
  • What would make a correction or a next step possible?

Unfinished possibilities can also be useful: a clear plan can leave room to respond to a new idea. These are illustrative examples. Next: how information changes as it enters a decision.

Rough closure describes a definite operation considered alongside consequential conditions that remain unsettled at a stated scope. A decision may be clear and valid within a procedure while questions about its interpretation, support or consequences remain unresolved. Roughness does not mean that every decision is vague, or that a system is partly closed in a measurable percentage. (Watson and Brezovec, 2026, AE2.6)

A definite result can leave a consequential question open

Consider a returned library book. The book is physically in the library, but the lending record still marks it overdue. Physical return and administrative clearance are different operations. Whether the difference matters depends on the situation: a delay may be harmless, or it may trigger a charge and prevent borrowing. This constructed example locates a specific mismatch rather than declaring the entire library “rough”.

The relevant inquiry follows what happened, which record governs the next decision, and how the borrower can secure an effective correction. A more complete description of the physical event will not help if the person receiving it lacks authority to change the lending record. The unresolved issue concerns an operative pathway as well as information.

Closure already permits dependence

In systems theory, operational closure concerns how a system produces its operations through its own organisation. It does not mean causal isolation or material independence. An ecological account therefore needs to do more than point out that systems have environments. It must identify which dependency or unsettled relation changes the explanation of a particular outcome. (Luhmann, 1995) (Watson and Brezovec, 2026, AE2.6)

AE2.6 connects rough closure to three questions that require different answers. First, an operation depends on conditions it does not exhaustively constitute or control. Second, any account of that operation selects some relations and leaves others unrepresented. Third, a particular procedure may exclude a consequential claim or make it ineffective. Ontological dependence, analytical selection and practical exclusion should not be collapsed into a single failure. (Watson and Brezovec, 2026, AE2.6)

A worked example in educational AI

In the guide’s constructed assessment case, a teacher corrects an erroneous AI comment. The visible feedback now states the correct interpretation. A learner profile, however, retains the original diagnosis and supplies it to the next planning tool. The local correction is definite, while the relation between correction and subsequent reliance remains unresolved. (Watson, 2026, Operability)

We can specify the scope: one feedback episode, the learner record it affects, and its next use in planning. Evidence would include the versions of the comment, the teacher’s judgement, the stored profile and what the planning tool actually retrieved. A correction notice alone cannot establish that the operative record changed. Conversely, if the amended record is used correctly, that is evidence of a successful pathway rather than continuing failure.

What the concept adds to an inquiry

Rough closure directs attention to the relation between a settled action and a consequentially unsettled condition. It can prompt questions about who can amend a record, whether a response arrives before a deadline, or which interpretation governs later action. Its usefulness depends on identifying a difference that matters to the question being investigated.

Infrastructure research supplies an important comparison. Star and Ruhleder’s study of a scientific information system showed how favourable assessments of an interface could coexist with difficulties of access and use. They investigated relations among technical design, organisational practice and communication. AE did not discover such dependence; it proposes a particular vocabulary for connecting it to the determination and continuation of operations. (Star and Ruhleder, 1996)

Montévil and Mossio provide another comparison by making the timescales of constraints explicit in biological organisation. A relation that is stable at one interval may depend on renewal at another. AE’s uses outside biology require their own evidence rather than borrowing the authority of that biological account. (Montévil and Mossio, 2015)

Research questions and limits

  • Which operation was completed, according to which procedure or criterion?
  • Which condition remains unsettled, and what observed consequence makes it relevant?
  • What evidence distinguishes missing information from limited authority, scarce resources or deliberate refusal?
  • Which intervention changes the next consequential action?

An unexplained event is not automatically evidence for rough closure. The concept becomes unhelpful if every complication is included after the fact or if the boundary expands whenever an explanation fails. The operation, interval and proposed relation should be declared before comparing alternatives. A simple clerical-error account may be sufficient; AE needs to show when following a wider dependency changes the explanation or the remedy. (Watson and Brezovec, 2026, AE2.6)

Repair may require changing a pathway, providing resources or ending an operation. It need not eliminate every uncertainty. Some unsettled possibilities are productive, and some exclusions are justified. The ethical question concerns whose capacities and claims are affected, not the achievement of complete closure.
